Hi this is Ginger Robbins with Register Real Estate Advisors and you can view my Green Minute Video below:

Today we are talking about Geothermal heat pumps. GHPs have been in existence since the 1940’s. In a nutshell, these are systems that use the Earth’s constant level of temperature as an exchange medium to maintain a constant temperature in your home.

Depending on latitude, ground temperatures range from 45 degrees F to 75. Like a cave, this ground temperature is warmer than the air above it during the winter and cooler than the air in the summer.

As with any heat pump, geothermal and water-source heat pumps are able to heat, cool, and if equipped, supply the house with hot water. Some models are available with two-speed compressors and variable fans for more comfort and energy savings. In comparison to air-source heat pumps, they’re quieter, last longer, need little maintenance and don’t depend on the temperature of the outside air.

Then installation price of a GHP can be several times that of an air-source system of the same heating and cooling capacity, but the additional costs are returned to you in energy savings in as little as 2 years. Another great point is the system life is estimated at 25 years for the inside components and 50+ years for the ground loop. You might want to know that there are approximately 50,000 GHPs installed in the US each year so it is not necessarily an unheard of system!
