In general, Icehouses are laid-back establishments that have fun entertainment like pool tables and dart boards. They are unique to Texas – from Houston to San Antonio. They really started out as true “Icehouses” where ice was sold in the 1920s and 1930s. Then, they started chilling beer in the ice so that the man of the house could stop by and have a beer before he picked up ice, 10 cents for 25 pounds, back then, to take home for his family. Then, some added grocery/food items—thought to be the origin of the “convenience” store!
Scooters is different than most Icehouses because of its large size, ample parking area, and, because they sell so much beer. Due to their high beer volume, they keep the brew in huge, walk-in coolers instead of keeping it on ice.
Also, Scooters is different from most other Icehouses in that it has a full-scale kitchen specializing in quarter-pound hamburgers while most other icehouses serve only snack-type food.
