As a buyer, you need to know the new rules in effect for tax exemptions. Exemptions can be requested from January 1-April 30th.
Anyone who is filing a request for an exemption for their real estate taxes in Harris County (whether it be homestead, over 65, disability, etc) must have a valid driver’s license or state issued ID. A valid driver’s license is one that shows your current address and is un-expired. Many people do not take the time to update their address on their driver’s license when they move, even though the law requires it to be updated within 30 days of a move. In addition to a valid driver’s license, HCAD (Harris County Appraisal District) is also requiring the homeowner to send a copy of their vehicle registration showing the correct address too.
