AUSTIN (TDI) – Consumers suffering property damage in the wake of the recent severe weather should contact their insurance companies promptly to begin the claims process.

These tips from the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) can help facilitate the claims process.
Contact your insurance provider as soon as possible. All insurance contacts should be recorded and kept in a safe place. Be prepared to answer questions concerning the severity and extent of the damages. Generally, homeowners insurance covers losses from wind and hail, not flooding, but consumers with flood insurance can contact their agent or the National Flood Insurance Program.
Record all damaged property. Make a list of what is damaged, and photograph or video the damage if possible. Do not throw away damaged items until an insurance adjuster has had a chance to see them.
Take steps to minimize further damage, but do not make permanent repairs until instructed by your insurance provider. Keep all repair receipts in a safe place.
Try to be present when the insurance adjuster assesses the damage. Be sure your address is visible on the property. If you must move out of your home temporarily, leave a note or plywood sign with your temporary address, phone number, and name of your insurance company.
Ask your agent about additional living expenses or loss of use. Your insurance policy may pay some expenses if you are unable to live in your home because of a covered loss. Keep documentation of related expenses.
